Service to our Higher Power Treating ourselves and others well, making the world (or our corner of it) a better place, and putting others' needs ahead of our own in a healthy way are all service to our Higher Power. When we specifically set out to share hope and faith and when we're helping our Higher Power work through us for the benefit of others, we're closer to understanding a loving, caring nature. We can directly surrender selfishness, self-will, and self-seeking behavior through meditation, prayer and acts of kindness, and in the process we also hand back the tools to do good work to a power more skilled at using them than ourselves. Service to Friends These people not only love us in a general way, they even like us! Great joy can be found in helping our friends in their daily lives, through their struggles, and celebrating their triumphs. Although some of us may remember unhealthy friendships based on mutual use and distrust, we begin each day free to develop lasting bonds with others based on generosity and kindness, asking nothing in return, but receiving more than we could imagine in our wildest dreams. Service to Community This is perhaps the easiest way to maintain anonymity in service, and one of the most rewarding to our hearts. So many people we have never met and never will have gone through their lives thinking the world is a cruel place, when one of them stumbles upon a random act of kindness it can be a life changing event. It takes real faith to "throw it out to the universe," because there is always the possibility that this form of service may go unnoticed or unappreciated. The other side is, anonymously offering service to our community increases our faith exponentially. |
